COGS Programmers

Freelance Contracts

Clockwork Dog are looking for freelance Programmers to work on the COGS programming for a number of immersive theatre shows over the rest of this year.

Our Programmers are responsible for programming the COGS project packs for our projects. They need to have a strong grasp of logic, and relish finding the most elegant solution for complex programming problems, using ‘When This, Do That’ to build automated interactions between a range of inputs and outputs. They need to be clear communicators, collaborating closely with other technical departments to ensure harmonised show control. Finally, they need to be resourceful and personable, able to remain calm and positive during long tech sessions in tight timeframes.

Experience with COGS is not expected, and training and support will be provided on your first jobs with us. You can always download a Lite version of COGS and experiment with making basic project packs to try it out!

Candidates will:

  • Have experience with programming either lighting or sound for theatre or live events, using softwares like QLab, grandMA3 or Eos;

  • Have a strong understanding of principles of logic programming (familiar with a ‘When This, Do That’ format, as well as concepts like variables, fixed values and If statements)

  • Have good working knowledge of show control concepts like OSC, timecode and DMX;

  • Actively enjoy finding the most elegant solution for programming problems;

  • Be intuitive and fluent users of computer softwares, able to pick up a new software and quickly build a familiarity with it;

  • Be comfortable working long hours onsite (three-session tech days are relatively common);

  • Be clear and personable communicators, happy collaborating with other technical departments to reach the best creative product;

  • Be able to work under pressure within tight deadlines, communicating estimated timeframes and flagging when an objective may be unrealistic within an allotted time.

Ideal candidates will have experience specifically in an immersive theatre setting.
