Production Technicians

Freelance Contracts

We are seeking Freelance Technicians to support the production services side of the business, reporting to the Head of Production.

The Technician will be responsible for the specification, installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of interactive technical systems, working on a variety of projects at different sites as required to support the operation of the production department. The majority of our projects are immersive theatre shows, but we’ve also recently worked with escape rooms, mini golf courses and brand activations.

While all projects use Clockwork Dog’s proprietary hardware / software, projects also involve the use of third-party hardware and software, as well as custom-built solutions.

We appreciate that this is a relatively niche role within a relatively niche industry, so experience with COGS or other interactive hardware and / or electronics solutions is not essential - but if you have any experience on projects incorporating interactive electronics, robotics, microcontrollers etc., we’d love to hear about them!

What you’ll be doing

  • Working onsite to fit interactive inputs (like switches, sensors and RFID readers) and outputs (like maglocks, motors, and LEDs) in set and prop installations

  • Installing infrastructure to support the technical system, including the network and power equipment needed to run COGS, and the low-voltage power and signal cables to connect COGS hardware to inputs and outputs.

  • Finding and specifying technical solutions to creative problems, collaborating closely with other external technical theatre departments (Set, Props, Lighting, Sound and Video).

  • Troubleshooting problems within an interactive technical installation, accurately diagnosing issues and finding effective solutions.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Meaningful experience in professional technical theatre - ideally in an immersive or site-specific setting.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills - able to clearly express technical concepts, and comfortable dealing with colleagues, partners and clients in a personable manner.

  • Practical technical competencies with wiring, crimping and soldering.

  • Strong technical knowledge, with a good working knowledge of current lighting and sound practices, ideally in immersive settings.

  • Good working understanding of the principles of computer networking, ideally in a show control context;

  • Capable and intuitive IT user - fluent working with Google Workspace / MS Office, and comfortable using both Mac OS and Windows.

  • Proactive and self-motivated - able to take the initiative and react quickly in a constantly changing environment and a fast-evolving company.

  • Basic carpentry skills, for fitting sensors, switches, cables etc into props and sets.

  • An ability and willingness to travel (UK and internationally) for onsite work

  • The right to work in the UK

Desirable

  • An interest in live interactive work (e.g. immersive theatre, escape rooms)

  • Experience using any of the following types of hardware: maglocks; DC motors; actuators; servos; RFID readers / tags; relays; analog and digital sensors.

  • Experience with technical control software such as QLab, grandMA3, Eos.

  • Experience with electronics or microcontroller projects (e.g. Arduino or Raspberry Pi)

  • Access to their own car for work travel within the UK
